No século XIX deu-se um desenvolvimento da exploração mineira, nomeadamente na década de 70, com a descoberta de novos minérios, como barita, manganés e manganite.
A maior exploração nesta zona foi, no entanto, de ferro, existindo cinco minas deste tipo de extração: Cerro da Fonte, Santa de Cima, Toca do Mocho, Serra da Mina, Serra das Tulhas e Serra de Rosalgar. Todavia, estas minas findaram a sua atividade em 2000.

Afonso II confirmado a doação de seu pai à Ordem dos Espatários.
Em 1895 chega a Portugal o primeiro automóvel. É propriedade do Conde de Avilez, de Santiago do Cacém; - O primeiro Rolls Royce que veio para Portugal, veio também para Santiago do Cacém, propriedade de José Sande Champalimaud; - O registo n.º 1 para automóveis, passado pelo Ministério das Obras Públicas em 1904 foi para Santiago do Cacém, em nome de Augusto Teixeira de Aragão.
