’Darque is said to owe its name to Archius, the leader of an ancient Roman villa that once existed along the Lima River. Before having any commercial area, Darque was already a village recognized as the cradle of large companies such as the Spinning Roses or the extinct factory of Seca do Bacalhau, which received the ’faithful friend’ of the seas of Newfoundland and Greenland for its preparation and subsequent commercialization. And it was in Darque that the famous Louça Regional de Viana began to be produced, in a factory in the place of Cais Novo, which worked between 1774 and 1855, later being reborn in Meadela.

With 7817 inhabitants, Darque is one of the most populated villages in the district and, among its illustrious and popular inhabitants, stand out the charismatic Maria Taipeira dos gigantones and cabeçudos, the popular theater actor Manica, the poet ’Buckles’, the Nelinho of the newspapers, the midwives of the Apolónia people, Micas Barroselas and Joana Pepina, the doctor Carteado Mena, who was a pioneer in radiology in Portugal, and his wife Wilhelmina Suggia, a noted violist. Without forgetting the entrepreneur and visionary António Cunha who designed what would become the largest and best minhoto camp in the country at Quinta de Santoinho.

With a strategic sea port for the district, Darque has several social responses through the Parish Center for Social and Cultural Promotion and benefits from a great associative dynamism thanks to institutions such as SIRD, Association of Pensioners, Association of Fishermen, Group of Scouts and the Columbophilia Society. The village is still a reference in surfing thanks to the high performance center of the modality installed on the beach of Cabedelo, where Luziamar was born, one of the most beautiful complexes of restoration and nightlife that marked generations. Also at the sporting level, highlight for the practice of canoeing, through the Darque Kayak Club, which has contributed to affirm Viana do Castelo as a nautical city, from where the champion Darquense Sérgio Maciel has already sprouted. And for Darquense who, in football, promotes the formation of hundreds of young people. Torn by National Stay 13, Darque has a station and the footpath of the Place of the Sand that facilitates the mobility of its citizens.’
