This picturesque Alentejo village, made up of narrow streets and whitewashed houses, holds within it the memory of the ancient and powerful Military Order of Avis. After the conquest of the town from the Moors, in 1211, the land was ceded by King D. Afonso II to Fernando Anes, Master of the Friars of Évora, future Order of Avis, with the aim of populating the region and building the castle, which occurred between 1214 and 1223. As you stroll through the town, you will find three of the castle’s six original towers: Torre da Rainha (Torre da Rainha), Torre de Santo António (Torre de Santo António) and Torre de São Roque (Torre de São Roque), as well as some sections of the medieval wall that were incorporated into the town’s houses. At the top of the granite hill, surrounded by the waters of a nearby river, Avis thus came to exist under the protection of the monastery of the order that gave the town its name.
You should enter the central square of Largo do Convento passing through the Porta da Vila door, next to the Torre da Rainha, through which you will see a panoramic view of the plain that stretches into the distance in front of you.
In the historic center of the village, visit the church and outbuildings of the former convent of the Military Order of São Bento de Avis, recently restored. The neighboring building, today the seat of the City Council, was part of the residence of the Masters of the Order. If you go left, you will find the original pillory in front of the staircase leading to the municipal park, decorated with masks and gargoyles. In addition to all this, there is an eagle with open wings, which has become the symbol of the city. The 15th century parish church is also worth a visit, covered inside with 17th century polychrome tiles.
Surrender to the charm that exudes from these narrow medieval streets and the white walls of the typical Alentejo houses, and rest for a while in the small but charming Jardim do Mestre de Avis, letting your gaze rest on the village and the immense one clearly below you.
In the neighboring area, be sure to visit the reservoir formed by the Maranhão dam, dating from the 1950s and designed to irrigate the surrounding region, where you can also practice various sports. The viewpoint next to the dam allows you to enjoy a magnificent view over this artificial lake and the surrounding pastures and wheat fields.
