’It is said that Darque owes its name to Arquius, the leader of an ancient Roman village that existed next to the Lima River. Before it had any commercial area, Darque was already a village recognized as the birthplace of large companies such as Fiação Rosas or the extinct Seca do Bacalhau factory, which received its ’faithful friend’ from the seas of Newfoundland and Greenland for its preparation and subsequent commercialization. And it was in Darque that the famous Viana Regional Tableware began to be produced, in a factory in place of Cais Novo, which operated between 1774 and 1855, later being reborn in Meadela.

With 7817 inhabitants, Darque is one of the most populated villages in the district and, among its illustrious and popular inhabitants, the charismatic Maria Taipeira of the gigantones and cabeçudos, the popular theater actor Manica, the poet ’Fivelas’, Nelinho of the newspapers, the midwives of the Apolónia people, Micas Barroselas and Joana Pepina, the doctor Carteado Mena, who was a pioneer in radiology in Portugal, and his wife Guilhermina Suggia, a recognized violencelist.
