Location:
Until the creation of the parish, ’Campo de Ourique’ referred only to the homonymous neighborhood of the city of Lisbon. It is located in the heart of the city, between the Mulberry Trees, the Star and the Pleasures. It is a residential neighborhood, but with a vocation for very strong and old trade.
Campo de Ourique is a neighborhood with a life of its own, it looks like a small town within Greater Lisbon. It is often pointed out as the most peaceful neighborhood of the city of Lisbon and the one that brings together the best living conditions, differentiating from other urban areas that rely excessively on shopping centers.
The working days and the weekend do not seem to be distinguished, because the quiet and paradoxically dynamic movement of the people crosses the neighborhood every day of the week at the same pace.
Culture and Leisure:
From the built heritage of Campo de Ourique, stands out the Church of the Holy Constable, emblematic monument of the area authored by Vasco Regaleira, the architect of the ’new churches’ and the Church of Santa Isabel. Until 2010 there was the building of the former Cinema Europa built in the 30’s and redesigned by architect Carlos Antero Ferreira in 1958, with sculpture by Euclides Vaz.
In the 1980s and 90s, several bands emerged in Campo de Ourique, having marked the national music scene: Ena Pá 2000, Pop Dell’Arte and Essa Entente. Also the first Portuguese independent record label, Ama Romanta, originated in the neighborhood in 1986, and then its head age at Rua Coelho da Rocha.
Visiting Campo de Ourique is much more than coming to know the monuments that exist here. You can’t miss Casa Fernando Pessoa and Casa Amália Rodrigues, the churches of Santa Isabel and Santo Condstable, but walking around the neighborhood is also a program not to be missed. Discover the beautiful facades of the buildings, get to know the Artists’ Courtyard - one of Lisbon’s best kept secrets - and sit back on one of the benches of Jardim da Parada.
The many and varied shops that exist in the neighborhood are also worth your visit and be sure to try the varied cuisine that the restaurants offer. If you are greedy, you are in the right place: campo de Ourique’s pastries are many and have delicious cakes.
Education:
Campo de Ourique has several options at the level of the school network, in the various degrees of education.
It has a significant offer of Public Pre-School Education, with four Kindergartens.
The parish also has four schools of the 1st Cycle, two 2nd Cycle, three of the 3rd Cycle, and two secondary schools.
In Campo de Ourique there is also a reference university, the Higher School of Education of João de Deus.
In addition to these public institutions there are also private institutions of reference guaranteed access to good studies for people of various social classes.
