Beja is a Portuguese city, capital of the District of Beja, being inserted in the sub-region of the Lower Alentejo, and in the region of Alentejo, with 24 074 inhabitants in its urban perimeter.
It is the seat of the Municipality of Beja which has a total area of 1 106,44 km2 and 33 401, inhabitants subdivided into 12 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Cuba and Vidigueira, to the east by Serpa, to the south by Mértola and Castro Verde and to the west by Aljustrel and Ferreira do Alentejo.

It is believed that the city was founded about 400 years BC, by the Celts, specifically by the people of the Celtics, a Celtic people who inhabited much of the territories of Portugal south of the Tagus River (current Alentejo and Setúbal Peninsula), and also part of Spanish Extremadura, to the territory of the Conians (current Algarve and part of the south of the district of Beja). It is also possible that it was founded by the Conians, who called it Conistorgis, although the location of this city is still unknown. The Carthaginians settled there for some time in the third century BC, just before their defeat and expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans (Latins) following the second Punic war.

In the third and second centuries BC there was the process of Romanization of the local populations and this city became part of the Roman civilization, belonging to a very Romanized region. The first references to this city appear in the second century BC, in accounts by Polybius and Ptolemy.
