The village is divided into two distinct areas: the historic Moorish quarter, which extends along the castle slope, and the ’New Church,’ a flatter area that developed after the 1755 earthquake. The 16th-century Church of Mercy and the 18th-century Main Church of Our Lady of Alva are other points of historical and architectural interest.

Aljezur’s sweet potato is so significant that it has an annual festival in October where it can be enjoyed in many different ways.
