Near Alte and Benafim, with an area of approximately 97 km2, it is located in the centre of the Algarve and in the extreme northwest of the municipality of Loulé. It extends across mountainous and barrocal lands, with the Serra do Caldeirão rising to the north. Rocha dos Soidos, at 482 metres above sea level, is the highest area in the parish, having served in the past as a reference point for sailors. From this location, you can also see the entire parish of Benafim, as well as other parishes in the interior.
The village of Alte, once considered the most typical in Portugal, remains faithful to its origins, thanks to an investment in restoration and maintenance made by the local authority, in order to preserve its original features, where the main church, probably built in the 1500s, continues to be the oldest historical landmark in Alte.
The village, the Fonte Grande and the entire surrounding area, characterized by the picturesque environment that surrounds it, are visited annually by many thousands of tourists who linger in the restaurants and cafés of the locality, after having bought the traditional handicrafts of the land, such as regional sweets, wooden toys, pottery and esparto grass work. The houses are white and simple and have few roof terraces, but they have the most beautiful lace chimneys in the Algarve. Alte Aldeia Cultural and the Festa do 1° de Maio are, without a doubt, the highlights of the festivities held throughout the year.
