It was near São Bartolomeu de Messines that the Battle of Sant’Ana took place, fought in 1834, near the Chapel of the same name, in the middle of the Algarve mountain region, a few kilometres to the north, resulting in a victory of the Miguelist troops (also called royalists or legitimists), against the liberals (also called constitutionalists). Like other parts of the country, the dispute was at that time very heated.
