Location:
Olivais is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lisbon, belonging to the Eastern Zone of the capital, one of the most populous parishes in the city of Lisbon. It has an area of 809 hectares and continues to be the second largest parish in the city of Lisbon.
The parish is included in the eastern part of the city, organised into four major regions: the Bairro da Encarnação, the Historic Center (or Olivais Velho), and the neighbourhoods of Olivais Norte and Olivais Sul, which in turn are subdivided into several other agglomerations.
Much of the western territory of the parish is occupied by part of Lisbon Airport, including the headquarters of TAP Portugal (Building 25, Portela Airport).
The parish of Olivais was created on May 6, 1397, by the Archbishop of Lisbon, D. João Anes, and confirmed by a bull of July 1, 1400, of Pope Bonifácio IX.
The formation of the new ecclesiastical unit took place with lands from the Lisbon Term. Much earlier, however, the same lands belonged to the outskirts of the city, beyond Chelas, with the Marvila of the Moorish mosques in the possession of the bishopric since 1149; and, presumably, to the parish of Sacavém, established in the twelfth century, perhaps on the sites of Marcos, Encarnação and Portela. Vague and oscillatory limits.
Donated to the capital in 1385 by King João I, in reward for services rendered to the nation and royalty, this Term was more or less condensable as follows: «the entire territory of the kingdom comprised between the Atlantic Ocean, to the west; the same ocean and Tagus River, to the south; the same river to the east; and bounded to the north, perhaps, by the river Alcabrichel on the ocean side and by the Ota stream on the Tagus side’. Soon after, consequently, the area of the future parish came under the administrative and police municipal jurisdiction of the city. This situation lasted until the nineteenth century.
