A Coudelaria Real, fundada em 1748 por D. João V, contribuiu muito para a divulgação do nome da vila. Foi aí que se iniciou a recuperação da raça lusitana Alter Real, um cavalo de Alta Escola. Aí funciona ainda a Escola Profissional Agrícola de Alter do Chão.

Cunheira, located 36km from Avis, occupies an area of 4553 hectares where around 700 people have lived. It is the most recent parish in the municipality, having been created on February 20, 1976.
