Segundo os Censos 2011, a freguesia possuía uma população residente de 29 763 habitantes, o que representou um aumento de cerca de 46% em relação ao Censos 2001.

A freguesia de Charneca de Caparica foi criada em 4 de Outubro de 1985 (Lei nº 125/85)[1] com território destacado da freguesia da Caparica. Esta freguesia foi extinta em 2013, no âmbito de uma reforma administrativa nacional, tendo sido agregada à freguesia de Sobreda para formar a União de Freguesias de Charneca de Caparica e Sobreda.[2]

Por sua vez, a povoação da Charneca da Caparica foi elevada à categoria de vila em 2 de Julho de 1993 (Lei n. º 35/93).[3]
